Luminescence Characteristics of Green Grossular Garnets

Some light green grossular garnets exhibit orange-red luminescence under long-wave and short-wave ultraviolet light. To characterize their behavior, we studied seven with typical colors ranging from yellowish-green to intense by using photoluminescence (PL), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In the PL spectra of these samples, a broad band exists at about 589 nm three sharp peaks appear 697, 702 716 nm. The three-dimensional fluorescence reveal two emissions. They are (1) near 600 nm; (2) series centered UV–Vis spectra, prominent asymmetrical absorption bands 430 605 related Cr3+ or Cr3+/V3+, minor 408 419/420 Mn2+. EMPA LA-ICP-MS analysis confirmed existence trace elements Ti, V, Cr Mn. Furthermore, EPR spectrum excluded V2+ V4+ Mn2+, Fe3+. Regarding an interesting phenomenon was reported in which intensity could be suppressed higher concentrations V. These results imply that chromium manganese activators garnets, vanadium is powerful quencher.
